Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon Sinuplasty vs
Traditional Sinus Surgery

The differences between balloon sinuplasty and traditional endoscopic sinus surgery are dramatic — especially when you consider invasiveness, recovery time, and discomfort levels.

Understanding the Differences

Two Approaches to Treating Chronic Sinusitis

The differences between balloon sinuplasty and traditional endoscopic sinus surgery are dramatic — especially when you consider invasiveness, recovery time, and discomfort levels.

Traditional endoscopic surgery involves general anesthesia to enlarge sinus openings and clear blockages, with removal of bone and tissue and cauterization — meaning more pain, extensive post-surgical care, greater risk of infection, and lengthier recovery.

Balloon sinuplasty is a safe, simple, in-office procedure: a tiny balloon catheter gently expands passageways and clears mucus blockages with no incisions or tissue removal.

Common Questions

Balloon Sinuplasty FAQs

For appropriate candidates with chronic sinusitis, balloon sinuplasty delivers outcomes comparable to traditional FESS — with significantly less discomfort, faster recovery, and no tissue removal. Your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy during your consultation to determine which approach is best for your individual case.
The main difference is how the sinus openings are enlarged. Traditional FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) removes bone and tissue to widen the passages. Balloon sinuplasty uses a small inflatable balloon catheter to gently expand the openings without cutting or removing any tissue.
Balloon sinuplasty is ideal for patients with chronic sinusitis who have not responded to medical therapy and do not have significant nasal polyps or complex anatomical issues. Patients with extensive polyp disease or more involved sinus anatomy may require traditional FESS or a combined approach.
