Ear Tube Placement in Austin, TX
Recurrent ear infections, persistent fluid behind the eardrum, or hearing loss from middle ear fluid? Capital ENT’s board-certified ENT surgeons place tympanostomy tubes (ear tubes) — a quick, effective outpatient procedure — for children and adults throughout Central Texas.
When Are Ear Tubes Needed?
The middle ear normally drains through the Eustachian tube, which connects to the back of the throat. When the Eustachian tube isn’t functioning properly — as is common in young children — fluid builds up behind the eardrum, creating an environment ideal for bacterial growth and infection.
Tympanostomy tubes — tiny cylinders placed through the eardrum — provide a ventilation pathway that bypasses the dysfunctional Eustachian tube, preventing fluid accumulation and the ear infections that follow. Ear tube placement is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the US.

- ~10-minute procedure under brief general anesthesia

When Ear Tubes Are Recommended
Recurrent Ear Infections
Three or more ear infections in six months, or four or more in a year, are standard indications for ear tube placement. Recurrent infections cause pain, fever, and hearing loss — and lead to frequent antibiotic use. Ear tubes prevent infections by allowing air into the middle ear and fluid to drain out, creating an environment where bacteria cannot thrive.
Request EvaluationChronic Middle Ear Fluid
Fluid persisting behind the eardrum for 3 or more months — even without active infection — causes conductive hearing loss that can impact speech development in young children and academic performance in school-age children. Ear tubes drain this fluid and prevent its recurrence, restoring hearing while the Eustachian tube matures.
Request EvaluationEustachian Tube Dysfunction in Adults
Adults can develop middle ear fluid from Eustachian tube dysfunction caused by allergies, sinus problems, flying, or anatomical issues. When conservative treatment fails to resolve middle ear fluid in adults, ear tube placement provides effective ventilation and relief from ear pressure, fullness, and muffled hearing.
Request EvaluationA Common Procedure With Excellent Results
Ear tube placement is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures — over a million procedures are performed in the US annually. The procedure itself takes approximately 10 minutes under brief general anesthesia for children (or local anesthesia for adults).
Tubes typically remain in place for 12–18 months before naturally extruding on their own. During this time, children and adults experience significantly fewer ear infections, improved hearing, and better quality of life.
Schedule a ConsultationShort-Term vs. Long-Term Tubes
Short-term tubes (grommet/bobbin style) are the most common type. They are placed for most children with recurrent infections or fluid and typically fall out on their own within 12–18 months as the eardrum heals.
Long-term tubes (T-tubes) have a flanged design that keeps them in place for 2–4 years. They are recommended for children who have required multiple sets of short-term tubes, adults with chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction, or patients who need extended ventilation.
- Short-term tubes: self-extruding within 12–18 months
- Long-term (T-tubes): 2–4 years for complex cases
- No visible scarring — procedure through the eardrum
- Hearing typically improves immediately after placement

~10 Minute Procedure
Ear tube placement is one of the fastest surgical procedures — most cases are completed in about 10 minutes under general anesthesia for children. Adult procedures can often be done under local anesthesia.
Quick & EfficientImmediate Hearing Improvement
Most patients notice improved hearing immediately or within hours after tube placement as fluid drains from the middle ear. The improvement can be dramatic, particularly for children with chronic fluid.

Short-term tubes typically remain in place for 12–18 months and then extrude naturally as the eardrum heals. Long-term tubes (T-tubes) remain for 2–4 years and may need to be removed in the office. Your ENT surgeon will recommend the appropriate tube type based on your child’s history and anatomy.
For most children with ear tubes, routine swimming in clean water is safe without ear protection. Deep water submersion and swimming in potentially contaminated water may be restricted. Ask your surgeon for specific guidance at your post-operative visit — recommendations vary based on tube type and individual circumstances.
Some tubes extrude earlier than expected. If ear infections or fluid return after tube extrusion, a second set may be recommended. Children who require multiple sets of tubes are candidates for longer-term T-tubes, and adenoidectomy is often recommended at the same time to reduce future infection risk.
Ear tube placement for recurrent ear infections or chronic middle ear fluid meeting clinical criteria is covered by most major insurance plans including Medicare. Our team will verify your benefits prior to scheduling.
Ear tubes are typically considered when a child has three or more ear infections in six months, four or more in a year, persistent fluid for three or more months with hearing loss, or when ear infections significantly disrupt daily life. An ENT evaluation will determine if your child meets criteria for tube placement.
