A sinus infection (acute sinusitis) usually lasts less than 4 weeks and is most often viral, clearing on its own. Chronic sinusitis is diagnosed when symptoms last 12 weeks or longer: a lasting inflammation of the sinus lining rather than a single passing infection. Frequent separate infections (four or more a year) are called recurrent acute sinusitis, as defined in the AAO-HNS adult sinusitis guideline.
Consider seeing an ENT if nasal congestion or facial pressure does not improve with medication, if a sinus infection lasts longer than about 10 days without improving, or if you have four or more sinus infections per year. Persistent symptoms often point to a structural or inflammatory cause that benefits from specialist evaluation.
