Styles We Fit

Hearing Aid Styles for Every Ear & Lifestyle

We fit hearing aid styles for every ear and lifestyle. At your appointment, our audiologists will help you choose the best style based on your degree of hearing loss, ear anatomy, dexterity, and cosmetic preferences.

Behind-the-Ear

BTE & RIC / RITE

A small device sits behind the ear and delivers sound into the ear canal through a thin tube (BTE) or a wire connected to a tiny receiver placed directly in the canal (RIC/RITE). Receiver-in-canal is the most popular style today — near-invisible, lightweight, and available with Bluetooth and rechargeable batteries. Traditional BTE remains the most powerful option for severe hearing loss.

Custom Molded

ITE · ITC · CIC · IIC

Custom-made from an impression of your ear for a precise, comfortable fit. Available in a range of sizes — from in-the-ear (ITE) models that fill the outer ear bowl to completely-in-canal (CIC) and invisible-in-canal (IIC) devices that sit deep inside the ear canal and are virtually undetectable. The smaller the device, the more discreet it is, though smaller sizes work best for mild to moderate hearing loss.

Implantable Solutions

BAHA & Bone Conduction

Bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA) transmit sound vibrations through the skull bone directly to the inner ear, bypassing the outer and middle ear entirely. Available as a surgically implanted device or a non-surgical headband system. An effective option for single-sided deafness, conductive hearing loss, or patients who cannot wear traditional hearing aids.

Not sure which style is right for you? Your audiologist will evaluate your hearing, ear anatomy, lifestyle, and preferences to recommend the best option at your appointment.

Technology Levels

Choosing the Right Technology for Your Life

Hearing aids come in multiple levels of technology and our audiologists will help you decide the right technology for your budget and needs.

  • PremiumThe most advanced performance available, delivering exceptional clarity in complex environments like restaurants, meetings, and social gatherings. These devices automatically adapt to your surroundings, provide the most natural sound, and offer the smoothest, smartest listening experience.
  • AdvancedExcellent performance in a wide range of settings, reducing background noise effectively and offering strong speech understanding for people with active routines.
  • Mid-LevelIdeal for everyday listening, offering reliable noise reduction and comfort for quieter conversations, small groups, and routine environments.
  • EssentialClear, simple amplification for one-on-one conversations and calm settings, providing dependable performance at the most accessible price point.

No matter the tier, each level is designed to support better hearing — your lifestyle simply determines how much technology is right for you.

The Fitting Journey

What to Expect at Your Hearing Aid Appointment

We're here to make your appointment feel easy, relaxed, and personalized to your hearing needs by taking a thoughtful, unhurried approach to make sure your hearing needs and goals are truly understood. Many patients leave their fitting appointment delightfully surprised — hearing sounds they haven't experienced in years.

1

Hearing Evaluation & Consultation

We start with a complete audiometric evaluation in our on-site sound booth to understand the type and degree of your hearing loss. Then we discuss your listening environments, communication goals, lifestyle, and budget to guide you toward the right solution.

2

Fitting & Verification

Your hearing aids are carefully programmed and verified using Real Ear Measurements. By placing a tiny microphone in your ear canal, we can confirm that the hearing aids are delivering the right level of sound at every frequency — precisely matched to your hearing needs.

3

Follow-Up & Fine-Tuning

Follow-up visits give us the chance to fine-tune your settings as your brain adjusts, answer questions, and make sure your devices are performing at their best. These visits are included for 3 years after your fitting — you're never on your own.

Insurance & Financing Options

Hearing aids are an investment in your overall well-being, and we want that investment to feel within reach. We'll walk you through your coverage and benefits upfront, so you have a clear understanding of your options before making any decisions.

  • Most major insurance plans accepted — we verify benefits before your visit
  • TRICARE benefits accepted for active-duty military
  • Flexible financing available through CareCredit
  • HSA and FSA accounts accepted
  • No-interest promotional financing available on qualifying purchases

Common Questions

Hearing Aid FAQ

Common signs include frequently asking people to repeat themselves, difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, turning up the TV louder than others prefer, and missing high-pitched sounds like doorbells or birds. A diagnostic audiological evaluation at Capital ENT will determine the degree and type of your hearing loss and whether hearing aids are recommended. Since some hearing loss has a treatable medical cause, we always recommend a full evaluation before purchasing any device.
Coverage varies by plan. Some insurance plans, including many Medicare Advantage plans, cover hearing aids partially or in full. Traditional Medicare (Part B) does not cover hearing aids, but covers diagnostic hearing testing when ordered by a physician. Our team will verify your specific benefits before your appointment so there are no surprises. We also offer flexible financing through CareCredit and accept HSA/FSA funds.
We fit hearing aids from top brands including Phonak, Oticon, Starkey, ReSound, and Widex. Our audiologists select the best brand and model based on your specific hearing loss, lifestyle, and preferences. If you have a preference for a specific brand based on prior experience, just let us know.
Most patients need 4–6 weeks to fully adjust to hearing aids. Your brain must relearn how to process sounds it has been missing — a phenomenon called auditory acclimatization. You may find voices sound "tinny" at first, or that everyday sounds like footsteps seem loud. This is normal and temporary. Follow-up appointments allow us to refine your programming, ensure a comfortable fit, and adjust volume for the best performance.
Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids can be a helpful starting point for adults with very mild, situational hearing difficulties, but they are not designed to address the full range of hearing needs. OTC devices offer limited customization, rely on self-fitting, and do not include a professional evaluation — meaning underlying medical issues or the true degree of hearing loss may be missed. Prescriptive hearing aids, on the other hand, are custom-programmed medical devices tailored to your unique hearing profile. They provide significantly better sound quality, noise reduction, speech clarity, and comfort, especially in challenging environments like restaurants or group conversations. These devices also support Real Ear Measurements, fine-tuned adjustments, and advanced features available only through a licensed audiologist. Working with an audiologist ensures your hearing care is safe, accurate, and effective — your audiologist performs a full diagnostic evaluation, rules out medical causes, recommends the appropriate level of technology, and provides ongoing support to optimize your hearing over time. While OTC devices may work for simple needs, prescriptive hearing aids paired with professional care deliver far superior results for most individuals and support long-term hearing health.
Most hearing aids last 4–5 years on average, though this can vary depending on the device, how well it's maintained, and changes in your hearing over time. Daily maintenance includes wiping the devices clean of earwax and moisture and storing them in a dry case overnight. We provide professional cleaning and minor repairs at your annual follow-up visits. Wax filters and domes (small tips that go in the ear) are replaced every few months and are inexpensive. Rechargeable models eliminate the need for weekly battery changes.
Our audiologists primarily fit hearing aids for adults. While we do occasionally fit pediatric patients, children with hearing loss generally benefit from seeing an audiologist who specializes in pediatric hearing. Pediatric fittings require specialized training and equipment, and early intervention is critical for speech, language, and cognitive development. Our ENT physicians can evaluate your child's hearing concerns and refer to a pediatric audiologist when appropriate.
In-house audiology is available at our Austin location (Margaux Colburn, AuD) and our Lakeway location (Jill Rodriguez, AuD, CCC-A). Patients from our Marble Falls and Dripping Springs clinics are warmly welcomed to schedule audiology appointments at the Lakeway clinic, which is typically the most convenient for those patients. Call Lakeway at 512-682-4798 to schedule.
