Understanding Chronic Sinus Infections: What Austin Patients Should Know

| Jeffrey Allen Myhill, MD, FACS, FARS | Sinus & Nasal

If you've been dealing with sinus infections that keep coming back—or one that simply won't go away—you're not alone. Chronic sinus infections are one of the most common reasons patients visit our Austin ENT practice, and we understand how frustrating and exhausting these ongoing symptoms can be.

At Capital ENT & Sinus Center, our board-certified specialists help patients throughout the Austin area find answers and relief from persistent sinus problems. Here's what you should know about chronic sinus infections and the options that may be available to you.

What Is a Chronic Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection, or sinusitis, occurs when the tissue lining your sinuses becomes inflamed and swollen. This can trap mucus, create pressure, and lead to infection. While acute sinus infections typically resolve within a few weeks, chronic sinusitis is defined as symptoms that persist for 12 weeks or longer despite treatment attempts.

Many patients we see have been dealing with symptoms for months—sometimes years—before seeking specialized care. They've often tried multiple rounds of antibiotics, decongestants, and home remedies with limited success.

Common Symptoms of Chronic Sinusitis

Patients with chronic sinus infections may experience some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Facial pain or pressure, especially around the cheeks, forehead, or between the eyes
  • Nasal congestion or obstruction that makes breathing through the nose difficult
  • Thick, discolored nasal discharge
  • Reduced sense of smell and taste
  • Postnasal drip
  • Fatigue and general feeling of being unwell
  • Headaches that may worsen when bending forward
  • Ear pressure or fullness

These symptoms can significantly impact quality of life, affecting sleep, productivity, and overall well-being.

What Causes Recurring Sinus Infections?

Chronic sinusitis often develops due to underlying factors that prevent the sinuses from draining properly. Some common contributing causes include:

Structural issues: A deviated septum, narrow sinus passages, or enlarged turbinates can block normal sinus drainage. These anatomical variations may be present from birth or result from injury.

Nasal polyps: These soft, noncancerous growths in the nasal passages can obstruct airflow and mucus drainage.

Allergies: Ongoing allergic reactions can cause chronic inflammation in the nasal passages, contributing to sinus problems. Many Austin residents experience significant allergies due to our local cedar, oak, and grass pollens.

Immune system factors: Some patients may have immune responses that make them more susceptible to chronic inflammation.

Environmental irritants: Exposure to pollution, cigarette smoke, or other irritants can aggravate sinus tissue over time.

How Are Chronic Sinus Infections Evaluated?

When patients come to our practice with chronic sinus symptoms, our specialists conduct a thorough evaluation. This typically includes a detailed review of your medical history, discussion of your symptoms, and a physical examination.

In many cases, we use nasal endoscopy—a minimally invasive procedure where a thin, flexible scope allows us to visualize the nasal passages and sinus openings directly. CT imaging may also be recommended to provide detailed pictures of your sinus anatomy and help identify any structural issues or areas of concern.

Treatment Options

Treatment for chronic sinusitis depends on the underlying cause and severity of your condition. Our team takes an individualized approach, often starting with conservative measures before considering procedural options.

Medical management may include prescription nasal sprays, saline irrigation, and in some cases, targeted medications to reduce inflammation. For patients with significant allergies, addressing those triggers through treatments like allergy shots may help reduce sinus inflammation over time.

When medical therapy doesn't provide adequate relief, procedural options may be discussed. Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive option that can widen blocked sinus passages without removing tissue. For more complex cases, endoscopic sinus surgery may be recommended to remove obstructions, polyps, or damaged tissue and restore proper sinus function.

When Should You See a Specialist?

Consider scheduling an evaluation with an ENT specialist if you experience:

  • Sinus symptoms lasting longer than 12 weeks
  • Frequent sinus infections (four or more per year)
  • Symptoms that don't improve with over-the-counter treatments or antibiotics
  • Severe facial pain or swelling
  • Changes in vision or severe headaches accompanying sinus symptoms

Early evaluation can help identify treatable causes and may prevent complications from prolonged infection or inflammation.
